Transit refers to the individual configuration. Most of the vans are leaving the factory with unfinished details to be completed by the contractor. The minibus floor is bare bones with vinyl seats and cheap but durable interior materials, but fabric seats and sound systems are available.
The passenger van can carry up to 15 people, including the driver. The wheel axis distance is 130 or 148 inches.
The basic engine is a 3.7-liter V-6 that produces 275 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The optional 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6 produces 310 hp and 400 lb-ft, and the 3.2-liter 5-cylinder turbo diesel produces 185 hp and 350 lb-ft. All engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, only rear-wheel drive.
Van achieves better fuel consumption than many trucks in transit. Ford was awarded the EPA with 14 mpg, 18 highway, 16 combined and 3.7 liter V-6. The V-6 is turbocharged with more horsepower and more torque (which means better towing and more cargo transport), without a penalty for its power at 15/18/16 mpg.
The 3.2-liter 5-cylinder turbo diesel was not rated by the EPA.
NHTSA provides four stars for front crash protection and five stars for side protection. Models with the highest ceilings receive only two stars for tipping safety. IIHS never tested the van.
Includes standard safety equipment, airbags, balance control and rear view cameras. The blind spot monitor and rear parking sensor are both available in configurations on the basic model, which we believe are required in such a vehicle.
When fitted as a passenger van, the rear seats are spacious and comfortable at the same time. The maximum configuration can carry up to 14 passengers plus the driver. Watch out for football coaches and moms.
As a cargo van, Transit offers an area of 487 cubic feet. Regular, long or elongated bodies are available with low, medium or high ceilings depending on the wheelbase configuration. A van with a high roof can hold cargo up to 74.3 inches in height in its class. This also means that the configuration you select can stand behind the 6-footer if it is a camping vehicle or a shipment.
When the rear window opens more than 250 degrees, the low window provides good visibility. However, of course, it can be difficult inside, especially as an article van.
