With three seats, a reasonable price tag and some good standard safety technology, it’s not hard to see why the Toyota Highlander is a popular mid-range SUV for families. However, the current Highlander generation grows a little longer on the teeth that Toyota has resorted to with a brand new Highlander for the 2020 model year introduced at the New York Auto Show.
The current Highlander’s Achilles heel is a subpar standard 4-cylinder engine. Admittedly, almost every Highlander was built with a V6 under the hood, but why did Toyota bother the four-in-line, naturally aspirated, non-hybrid line-up to the Highlander? We don’t have to worry anymore, because the Toyota Highlander has taken the logical step to turn the V6 into a standard engine, especially a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. Toyota will not say specific figures for city and highway fuel economy, but they promise 22 miles per gallon from V6.
The Highlander Hybrid is getting less powerful, but replacing the hybrid V6 of the Highlander Hybrid, which is replaced by a new four-row hybrid engine. The new Highlander Hybrid promises a very impressive 34 mpg combined rating, providing 17% improvement over its predecessor. It will have less power than the current Highlander Hybrid, but this is not very important for families who do not plan to make any pull. You’ll also get a front wheel drive Highlander Hybrid instead of all the hybrid models with a four-wheel drive standard, which hopefully means a lower base price for the hybrid.
Most updates to the new Highlander take what everyone already likes in the current model and makes it better. We’re a bit larger than the outgoing model, and we certainly like the new look, which is more stylish and modern and can be said in the new interior. If you prefer the second row seats, you can still sit up to eight or seven people.
The current Highlander’s major selling point is the standard Toyota Safety Sense P, but now the 2020 Highlander offers you an automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane change warning with steering assistance, upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 Offers help, road sign assistance and automatic headlights.
The 2020 Highlander’s standard infotainment system is an 8-inch touchscreen, but if you go to the top-level Platinum coating, you’ll be treated with a large unit of 12.3 inches tastefully integrated into the center stack. Toyota’s new infotainment systems at Highlander support Apple CarPlay and – finally – Android Auto plus Amazon Alexa.
Unfortunately, we do not know any information about Highlander’s pricing and availability from this post. We hope to see them in showrooms by the end of 2019, and hopefully we’ll hope to launch the MSRP at a low $ 30,000 range, even though the hybrid model isn’t higher than this.
